Joan Ryan MP has written to the Secretaries of State for Education and International Development to express strong support for the Send My Friend to School campaign
I was delighted to meet with pupils from Merryhills Primary School last month, who presented me with their beautifully designed rucksack petitions in aid of the Send My Friend to School campaign. I have now written to the Secretaries of State for Education and International Development on their behalf.
I was really impressed by the pupils' concern for the plight of school children around the world who do not enjoy the same access to education as they do and whose lives are far removed from their own.
We also discussed the problems that young carers in our country have to face by balancing their studies with caring for ill family members or friends. This can put a huge strain on their lives, which can often be a hidden cause of poor attendance, underachievement and bullying.
No child in a developing country should be denied the right to an education, even in times of crisis or conflict, and no child's education here in Britain should have to suffer as a result of the care they give to others.
