Joan Ryan MP meets with DCLG to discuss British Alevi community

Joan Ryan MP has met with the Faith Engagement Team from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and representatives from the British Alevi Federation.

It was a pleasure to meet with Hilary Patel, the Faith Engagement Team Leader at the Department for Communities and Local Government, and representatives from the British Alevi Federation.

We had a very positive meeting, discussing how the government can better understand and champion the Alevi community here in the UK, which is 300,000 strong.

As a proud representative of a large Alevi, Kurdish and Turkish community in Enfield North, I know how much they contribute to our society.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Alevis, of which I am Chair, was established in December 2015 to recognise the important contribution that the Alevi community makes to British society.

Our aim is to ensure that British Alevis are represented in Parliament by giving them a platform to express their legitimate socio-political aspirations, ensuring that they achieve recognition for their rights and religion in Britain and overseas.
